I don’t think many people who are old enough to have watched them both play in their prime (not just highlight videos) would seriously think Bryant is better than Jordon. This might be a good way to stir up discussion though, so hats off to you!
Stats and other details aside, one simple fact exists:
Jordon came before Kobe. Bryant was heavily influenced by Jordon but Jordon was not significantly (if at all) influenced by Bryant. Bryant would not be as good as he is today (and he is very good) without Jordan’s influence.
Furthermore, Kobe has nowhere near Jordan’s “presence”. Perhaps someone more familiar with stats and other details can explain better, but as someone who has attended Bulls games in Jordan’s prime and seen Bryant play live several times as well, Jordon was much more influential on the game in intangible ways than Kobe is. I don’t know what to call it, but it’s real and it’s there.
