The story behind this place is quite amazing.
Some 35 years ago, geologists were drilling for gas. They found an underground cavern that was so big that all the drilling site with all the equipment and camps got deep deep under the ground.
No one dared to go down there because the cavern was filled with gas, so they ignited it so that no poisonous gas could come out of the hole, and since then, it’s burning, already for 35 years without any pause.

That sounds like the most pointless thing in the world to do:
1) They were drilling for gas and found a huge cavern full of the stuff
2) No one had the guts to go down there, so:
3) THEY SET IT ON FIRE!?!?!?!?!?!?
