Mario has been around the block quite a few times over his 23 years of goomba bashing. He’s played Tennis, travelled into space, played Golf, and saved the princess time and time again. However, one activity that Mario has enjoyed a lot over the years happens to be #2 on my countdown. I’m of course talking about kart racing, and Mario Kart Wii.

Like Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Wii will stick to single-character racing, unlike that of Mario Kart: Double Dash on the Nintendo GameCube. A total of five different control choices have been confirmed, as players can choose to play the game using the Wii Wheel peripheral that comes packaged with the game, or any one of the following: the Wii Remote tilted on its side, the remote and nunchuk, a Nintendo GameCube controller, or a Wii Classic Controller.

While a complete character list hasn’t been released, several characters have been confirmed including Boo, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Koopa Troopa, Luigi and, of course, Mario. However, one of the most unique additions to this version of Mario Kart is the inclusion of bikes. For the first time in the series, players can choose between bike or kart racing, adding yet another layer of customization.

Mario Kart Wii races into stores on April 18th, 2008. Click below for the E3 Announcement from Reggie Fils-Aime.
