Wanna make those cool smoke bombs you see in movies?
Instead of making those bland ones, this guy shows you how to make colored ones.
You will need:
1) potassium nitrate
2) sugar
3) baking soda
4) organic powdered dye (choose your own color)

July 15th, 2007 at 22:36:39
well what kind of dye did you use?
what the hell is “organic powder dye”?
do you mean like “Rit”
I’m tired of paying for grenades at paint ball.
but i like the fact that they are color
i can easily make regular ones (without color) but have always considered that it would take fine powdered transition metals, or possibly a whole different mixture, with a different oxidizing agent.
Also, do you know if the smoke is harmful on contact, like eye, skin, mucous irritation… as in: is it safe to use on the paint ball field?
July 18th, 2007 at 00:26:52
on a different vid. they say it safe to use in paintball

“Rit” dye DOES NOT WORK. I tried it today and it was a major let down.

Doom! Help me out, dude. I am lost without the knowledge of what dye to use. Leave a message about it please.
August 7th, 2007 at 18:49:59
What happened when you used RIT did it not smoke or was it just still grey?
August 8th, 2007 at 14:19:16
Will powedered chalk work?
August 8th, 2007 at 14:20:24
Be sure not to put the backing soda in while it is still cooking it will be very hard to work with!! Hint hint…
August 8th, 2007 at 19:22:04
This video, like all of his other videos, is a fake. Sugar and potassium nitrate cannot sublime an organic dye.
Real colored smoke compositions are generally potassium chlorate or ammonium perchlorate based.
August 10th, 2007 at 11:55:17
hey, i´am from germany, i hope you can tell me what organic powdered dye is (when it is possible in german please :wink: or you tell me the “normal” name) ???
August 12th, 2007 at 00:40:44
first of all rit dye doesnt work i tried it the smoke was still gray and dont put baking soda in when its cooking it will foam up and burn the mix…. also let it cool and harden or it will flame up and burn and i have no idea what organic pwdered dye is………hope this helps oh and go to ebay for potassium nitrate $4.00 for 1lb can
August 17th, 2007 at 11:06:10
i think i have found it, at ebay.de—>

i dont know that oxid pouder works, this oxid powder costs 1kg 8€
August 18th, 2007 at 23:12:29
I’ve looked on many websites but i cannot find what kind of dye they use, sure the saltpeter(KNo3) and sugar works fine for white smoke, but I’m starting to think that there is not a dye that will work with that effect, which is disappointing, it could just be fake?(A real store bought one wrapped in duct tape) If anyone finds out which dye is used please post it.
August 19th, 2007 at 14:52:45
For Backing Soda u need only a temperatur under 60°C
when the mix is warm it is easier to mix it with Backing soda^^
and it is possible tu use organic dye i have done it in blue (my type works till temperatures of 1000°C).
August 21st, 2007 at 16:11:45
i really need to know where to get organic powdered dye
btw u can get potassium nitrate at a foodland or IGA or something just ask:wink:
August 23rd, 2007 at 17:53:15
Is it posible that the organic powdered dye is the color form batik?
August 25th, 2007 at 10:01:50
some dude named “shootingeggs” submitted that movie on metacafe.com so if you search his name on that site you can see he has alot of movies on how to make smoke bombs, THERMITE (melts steel), binary explosive, roadside bombs…HINT HINT he’s some kind of bomb squad technition or military engineer and he obviously has access to the knowledge/resources to make that kind of shit. Organic smoke dyes are mainly made by military contractors that only supply commercial or military clients so some zit poppin kid cant make this in his kitchen…..sorry for the let down………….RON PAUL 08

The smoke grenade works. I found powdered organic dye in a hobby shop in the candle making area where you buy the fragrances for candles. But as for a firework fuse, I fastened a pull-ring fuse in the pen hole, video on how to make a pull ring fuse is listed on metacafe (made by the same guy.) He has a website for more neat stuff at kipkay.com
August 26th, 2007 at 23:02:52
i think one guy realy know this recipe but his video was refused this guy is Loup26 from metacafe.com
August 27th, 2007 at 20:03:36
My stuff, once melted down, looks very thin. What am I doing wrong?
August 28th, 2007 at 02:35:59
Hey guys, organic powdered dye is something along the lines of Solvent dyes… Go to wikipedia and search for coloured smoke. Has a whole list there. This kind of dye is used for colouring candles, petroleum fules and plastics, all of which are done in large industries. This stuff is pretty damn expensive, I had to get it from a chemicals factory but thats only in South Africa
Not sure if it works thou, should find out by the end of today thou. Good luck

Pest how did it go did it work?
August 29th, 2007 at 00:54:55
hey where can you get a organic powder dye..?:?:
August 30th, 2007 at 22:36:38
This is really cool cause ive been researching smoke bombs for a long time wondering how to make one colored and i heard its not toxic really at all even a campfire is comparable as this. just dont breathe a lot of this stuff in because it may cause some resperatoy problems but probably wont happen unless your an idiot and do lots of them!
August 31st, 2007 at 10:14:09
Hello again.
The first colour didnt work, it was solvent orange 62. I’ve got one more to try out, its Solvent blue 35. If you search around, like wikipedia, for “colored smoke” you should see all the possible dyes there… You might notice that the orange one that I tried (and did not get to work) is not on the list, but the blue (which I haven’t tried yet) is on the list. so hopefully that works :D. Anyway, if anyone has more info one any of this stuff please leave a msg, maybe together we can overcome all problems GL HF

Thanks for the feedback pest please keep updating cheers m8
September 2nd, 2007 at 04:38:51
Hey
Yeah the other mixture did not work either (solvent blue 35). So here’s what I’m using… Potassium nitrate, sucrose (sugar), baking powder (sodium bicarbonate) and solvent dye (Blue 35 and orange 62). I have deduced that the burn temp is to high and just decomposes the dye. I’m gonna try get hold of some potassium chlorate, which is said to have a lower burn temp then the nitrate. I’ve also read that some mixtures use magnesium carbonate, probably to further reduce burn rate and temp.
If anyone has anything to add please leave a msg.

Hello
I do not actually think that you can make coloured smoke with the nitrate and sugar method, it just burns far to hot. Maybe I’m doing something wrong cause some guys in this blog have said they got it right but hey please fill me in on your secret.
Cheers

Hello, i’m french and i would know what is ” organic powdered dye”?? and in french how does it call?? Or can you give me a website with explications, pictures,…
Thanks for all!
Bye
September 3rd, 2007 at 19:24:51
The amount of baking soda in the video is not measured (hint), he just says a big spoon full.. more baking soda decreases the burn time thus creating a lower temp at which the dye is not decomposed because there is a slower reaction. The faster a reaction, yeilds a higher temp. Just like rubbing the palm of your hands together, the faster you go the warmer they feel. When a chemical reaction takes place, it creates heat, to slow down the reaction would create less heat at a given time.
September 4th, 2007 at 16:12:17
hey
will try that thanks, gonna have to add a damn lot thou… Knew about the reaction rate obviously but did not think you’d be able to get it low enough… Let me know if you get it right! Organic powder dye is stuff like solvent dyes, disperse dyes, vat dyes, oil dyes… They fall under azo dyes

Guess I will add my two cents. I have found a very nice site for your “chemical dependency”. Its called skylighter.com They have all the chemicals and also a nice explanation of what you can expect from that chem. You can also add it to your cart and have it shipped to you. I was about to order some salt peter it was selling for $5 per pound with a 5 pound minimum order. They also have other variants, such as sodium chlorate, which is what they reccomend rather than sodium nitrate. Anyway, hope this helps.
October 4th, 2007 at 17:39:37
I got all the stuff. I tried it out. First I used powdered dye for making tye dye shirts. I will find the site for you later. Well yeah it burned and we didn’t see much else. Baking soda was not used.
Attempt #2 I made 2 smoke nades and this time I did use the baking soda “1″ teaspoon. When I added it the mixture started to expand. “I got very worried” nothing happened and I packed it into the container and they are ready to go. I will try to set them off tonight and video tape my results.
October 10th, 2007 at 23:34:11
I tried out both of my smoke nades i had made tonight. Not a damn thing, they went up in flames and just burned through the cardboard and tape.
the dye i used is Dharma fiber reatcive dye 10A chinese red
65 raspberry (t)
1
8 orange rust

Organic dye is used in candles all the time. Michael’s, Franks Nursery & Craft and many other craft stores sell it in small hard blocks for used in candles. Break up the block to form a powder or past, then use that.
http://www.michaels.com/online/images/product/large/gc0172.jpg
However, something to keep in mind: This project gets expensive quick. It doesn’t take very long before you can just buy a commercial smoke bomb cheaper.
November 23rd, 2007 at 23:03:50
well KNO3 (potassium nitrate) is the oxidizer so that means the more of that you have in there the faster it burns, because more Oxygen is being delivered to the heat and fuel (sugar). If Bicarbinate ( baking soda) produces CO2 than the more baking soda you add the slower it will burn, which then would lead to a lower temp.

Hey, this is an xtract from an article about the hazards of Dye dust exposure.
“Worker exposure to dye dust through breathing or skin contact can result in adverse health effects such as occupational asthma, eczema, and severe allergic reactions. In addition, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH*) recognizes certain dyes as potential occupational carcinogens. Therefore, NIOSH recommends limiting dye dust exposures to the lowest feasible concentrations to prevent these health problems.”
So consider trying not to breath this stuff in.
January 2nd, 2008 at 16:52:59
ok now as most of you did i tried to create this smoke bomb as well and the result was very disappointing, used the same ingredients as the video said. well i decided why not watch it again to see what i did wrong, and during the end you can see that after he duct tapes the bomb the hole at the top is relatively small. Notice right before he lights it, the hole is larger. is that just me or does that look like a different bomb?
January 3rd, 2008 at 05:13:18
:neutral:sorry to disappoint everyone, this video is FAKE. it is probably just an internet bought smoke bomb duct taped up. check out his other videos-full of rubbish too!

this works soo well!!! my brother thought it came from thin air
February 20th, 2008 at 23:26:42
this video is not fake:mrgreen: i have tryed many different types of solutions I found that the best is 35g of potassium nitrate and 20 grams of sugar (you could double it if you want to) and a small about of baking soda helps it cool faster and it will puff up a little too. But for the organic die I have tried many different things. I would that ground up cinnamon works well or paprika works well
The best is onion skin extract! I hade to make my own first I pealed about 40 onions (that was so shitty:evil:) then I put the skin in 4 huge pots, then filled them with water and started to boil it. The water started to turn yellow red and then I took all the onion skin out and strained the water so now it was just red water then I boiled all the water out of the pot. There was some red stuff on the bottom I scraped all of that out and it was a powder.
It kind of sucked cause 40 onion were only enough for one good smoke bomb. The smoke was yellow and it was thick and puffed out a shit load of smoke
That’s what I found worked so ya that’s not fake

Paint ball sucks airsoft hurts alot more and you can have a lot more and cooler guns but some are a bit expensive
April 14th, 2008 at 02:35:13
the KNO3 and sugar really does make a smoke boom but im not to sure about the dye??? and the boom he lights is a different won he make im been making smoke bombs for 5 years now and iv never seen that much smoke with that amount of mixture. even with 98.9% pure KNO3.
with the dye iv never evan heard of “organic dye” but i once used potassium permanganate to make it go purple but it was only a very very light purple.
im am going to investigate all the links that ppl have posted up and get bake to you guys and gurls.

u can get potassium nitrate at wal mart its not pure but it works its in spectracie stump remover and if u think this vid is fake ur retarded this is the easiest and most affective way to make smoke bombs with house held stuff.
May 14th, 2008 at 00:15:10
I can’t believe what I’ve read in these replies. Half of you need to learn how to spell which tells me your kids which means you shouldn’t be messing around with any chemical.
Now listen up and learn.
The only good and thick smoke you will get with kno3 is WHITE.
If you want good and thick colored smoke you will HAVE TO USE KCLO3 and a few other chemicals I’m not going to mention.
NO IF’S AND’S OR BUT’S ABOUT IT.
May 14th, 2008 at 08:25:07
Its not that hard to make something if you really want it! The recipe mentioned above is right, the only thing you all are struggling with is ‘how to make it with color in it ?” So maybe I can help. Strontium carbonate = Red
Sodium nitrate = Yellow
Calcium chloride = Orange
Copper sulfate = Greenish-Blue
Copper chloride = Blue
Magnesium sulfate = White
Potassium permanganate = Purple
Those chemicals are relatively safe to use BUT yes there is always a BUT:grin: you should be carful when you are working with chemicals:!:. Like madmike says ; ‘ WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY’’ indeed .

i found the solution for organic powdered dye you could buy it at hobby lobby its called tye dye.
July 17th, 2008 at 21:12:57
I just stumbled upon this and thought I should share my experience with smoke bombs:
Considering this, I’d say, either settle for gray smoke (nitrate/sugar mixture is reasonably safe) or buy from the shop coloured, safe to breathe compositions.

You put too much sugar. I did it and it’s amazing.
Don’t forget the baking soda, that will calm the flame down.
Also you should cook it in a very ow temp.
If you do everything correctly , you get what you want, if not , you end up getting canser.
