Derren Brown plays a word game with author Iain Banks in which he (Derren) chooses a word that the author will later pick from his collection of books.

I think I have some ideas on how this one went about.

• At 2:42, he asks the author to “go ahead and ‘pop’ your right hand down on a book.”
• At 3:03, he bends the book in such a way that might have gotten the author to choose that particular page.
• He also says the word ’stop’ multiple times, which may have influenced the author’s decision.
• At 4:35, he asks the author to choose a “word that jumps out at you.”

How Derren chose the word at the beginning of the trick is beyond me.
