And I thought cats hated water. This cat goes into the water and fishes. All indoors.
Somehow I don’t think that’s a normal cat, so if you know what it is, feel free to comment.
Otherwise, enjoy these series of pictures.

It’s a FISHING cat…they hail from Indonesia, Asia, India, and are a bit larger than a domesticated house cat, as you can see from the photos. Check out the above mentioned website to promote your furthered education about these cats…and just for fun, check out online about what a sand cat is…cool little critters from the mideast…they are supposed to be vicious, although they look so cute and cuddly.

those who decree it is an indonesian fishing cat are correct.
those of the ocelot persuasion are incorrect. though both cats are similar in marking, the ocelot is an arboreal hunter. they are from the amazon after all.
fishing cats are one of the few cat species that will willing go into water. they do so to hunt fish.
further-more, just because you see pictures of a cat in a house does not mean you should infer it’s in america. sure, it may be illegal to have wild cats as pets in the states, but it could very well be legal -or straight up not worth looking into- in places such as indonesia. on top of that, even if these are american images, there are such things as outlaws. ^_^
and yes, sand cats are beautiful.

And Just because you see a cat in a bathroom, and a tub, don’t assume it’s a residential building. It may very well be part of a zoo, or animal shelter.
And it’s obviously a Schnoz cat. (Rhinose Humungae) In the last picture you can see it making its signature call, ‘Wahzzaaaaaahp!’

All I can say is that’s really sly! Poor fish, waiting to die, (yes i know that it would occur naturally, but at least the fish might have a chance to get away!). “Like shooting fish in a barrell?” Poor fishie!

It could be a bengal. I have one and they are large and love water. My bengal goes out in the rain to drink the raindrops and gets in the shower with me. They are big. They are not wild animals - they have to be 5 generations removed from the tiger cat they come from - they are exceptionally intelligent, friendly but incredible hunters.

It looks like one of these things to me - http://lifestylepets.com/cats.html - but I’m no expert. Who would pay 22 thousand dollars for a cat? When there are plenty of them running around, that don’t look as if they might rip your throat out while you’re sleeping. Or wide awake and fighting back, for that matter.

What you have there is an Ocelot…(Water Cat in Thailand) we owned a glorious female for several years when we were stationed in Thailand many years ago. We even had ours trained to use the toilet as a kitty litter box…unfortunately we never trained her to flush!!!
Thanks for the wonderful memories!!!!
October 21st, 2007 at 08:18:08
Definitely not domestic cat! But I advice anybody that goes to the lovely island of Melos to go to Apollonia. There is a cat there that fishes directly from the sea without even being wet!
October 21st, 2007 at 08:50:25
Thats cruel and sick.
October 21st, 2007 at 09:47:08
That is an Ocelot. You have to remember in many areas things are called by different names. Ocelots are actually very sweet I have a friend in Texas who helps rehabilitate large cats back into the wild after they have been abandoned or orphaned or even if they are a part of a breeding program to help repopulate the species. Tank (my friends Ocelot) is just like the one in the picture they have to be supported some sort of hunt, or they get frustrated and destroy chairs/tables ect. People shouldn’t be live in stereotypes they are not always correct, no all cats hate water, my cat will not go near a sink, where as I have seen domestic house cats that love showers and down were my mom lives the animals around the block will come get in there kiddie pool during the summer (dogs and cats alike).
Ocelots are on almost every content because people value them so much they were poached for rich family’s wanting rare and exotic pets, dates back to almost the 1600’s when dog’s where being inter breed more to get a domestic lap version, from there original origin in the Americas (be live it or not they are in north America as much as south, in the wild)
October 21st, 2007 at 10:07:17
Definitely a fishing cat. you can see the paws are partially webbed (in the third picture) and that the claws are partially visible even when fully retracted (in the seventh picture). In that same picture you can also note the fur is not soaked wet, like a common domestic cat would be after swimming in a bath-tub: Fishing cats have a double layer of fur so when they go in the water they don’t get wet down to the skin.

I saw these pictures along with quite a few more on a different website. It appeared as though the cat was being kept as a pet somewhere in Russia (though I could be wrong about the location). There were also pics of the cat killing a chicken and playing with an ordinary housecat, also swimming in the bathtub with it’s nude owner
Great collection of pics, I didn’t see a few of these on the other site.
About the ocelot/fishing cat debate. Regardless of how other places call an animal, for English, this is definatly a fishing cat and not an ocelot. Ocelots to english speakers are South American cats that are thin and wiry, and Fishing cats are heavy with big broad noses that hail from south Asia.
October 21st, 2007 at 21:08:11
How many times do you retards have to be told its a FISHING CAT and NOT an Ocelot. My god, dont any of you dumbasses google anything besides porn? If you picked up a book once in a while, I wouldnt be wasting my time schooling you fools on this.
And for those that are saying ‘poor fishy’ you need to step outside your ‘comfort zone’ and see what the real world is like. The comfort that many ‘civilized’ countries enjoy is a small fraction compared to the rest of the world. Many of your creature comforts you take for granted are not enjoyed by other people in the world. Many people go out and fish for food, hunt, etc. After whatever Megalopolis city you live in crumbles into chaos and you see a fish in the water after your starving for a week, lets hear you say ‘poor fishy’.
Stop projecting your over indulged egos onto the rest of the world and learn a thing or two. Not everywhere in the world will you find a McDonalds on every corner. Oh by the way, try their fish, its VERY tasty.

Rather than just arguing and calling each other names, it might be helpful if someone bothered to find a page with more information, such as scientific names, more pictures, habits and a description.

Wonderful cat
October 22nd, 2007 at 14:49:27
Ocelot, Fishing Cat….same thing. It’s the exact same thing. Poster “You idiots” IT’S THE SAME THING!
Also, while illegal to have as a pet in the US, it is not the case in many other countries. I know people who’ve had Ocelots as pets in Mexico. Though sweet and good-tempered, they are still wild cats with sharp claws and fangs, that will cut and bite if provoked. They may not mean to hurt you, but they inadvertently will. Kinda like when your housecat lashes out…..except this one can put you in the hospital. As with any other large animal: be cautious and show them respect.

You all do know that cats LOVE water, but under their conditions … i.e spraying them with a hose to clean them is not under their conditions , but that cat wanted the fish so he got wet
October 22nd, 2007 at 23:37:46
OK Lucy listen close. A fishing cat and an Ocelot are two different animals living in two different areas of the world and have two different names:smile. Leopardus pardalis is an ocelot and Prionailurus viverrinus is a fishing cat. I know very little about either but they are different species. I hope that you do not regularly mistake two different species because that could have some serious repercussions for you.
October 23rd, 2007 at 18:22:26
well..here’s more of the same cat.
and yeah, it’s not living it a shelter. its clearly a pet..and its owners are clearly..coo-coo.

What you have is a Bengal Cat. It is totally normal for them. They love water and it is normal for that species to fish. They are also a very affectionate breed that love to play fetch and “hunt.” They a lot of dog like qualities and Bengal kittens are at a premium! Go to http://www.bengalcat.com for more information.

This is a Fishing Cat, who belongs to a russian family. From what I read on one of the russian sites, couple who ownes the cat works at the local zoo. Cat was adopted by them when he was a kitten, I guess his mom and and siblings had some kind of feline desease and had died. They took him home cause everybody thought he is not going to pull it through, but they were able to nurture him back to health
December 20th, 2007 at 08:23:03
FIRST OF ALL STOP TE BENGAL THING IM SAYING THIS IS 200% FISHING CAT but anyways there were actually 2 kittens the other one died but this one survived they got the pet trough very diffucult way.Would be cool if they would try to make hybrids with this one i’ve allways wanted a cat like this though this kinda cat would need like way too big area for running outside and so on this would be reallyy expensive so those russians have to be quite rich tbh. the food costs quite much chickens huge fish etc. if they have the area for cat outside the fence must have costed quite much too so would be a dream but still hoping to have a cat like this some day…
December 29th, 2007 at 12:22:03
I think most cats same thing. Sure, they are predators but when given an easy meal they will most certainly go for it. My cats love to watch the fishtank and try to figure a way to get inside.
December 29th, 2007 at 12:56:00
That bloody animal took my fish away. What a terribly nasty creature.
December 29th, 2007 at 16:23:17
its an ocelot, fishing cats dont have spots throughout, but stripes on the top.
December 29th, 2007 at 18:47:15
why does nobody know how to use GOOGLE? Clearly, it is a fishing cat:
link
This animal is an exact match. An ocelot has pronounced vertical markings on it’s _face hard to miss.
Yes it is a wild animal, but this was originally posted on a Russian site. I’m sure their laws differ from ours somewhat.
December 29th, 2007 at 20:20:23
all i have to say, that i had a good laugh over this cat commentary from you folks. oh, for the fish lovers i hope you enjoy your sushi tonight.
December 29th, 2007 at 21:09:16
i’ve been relatively amused by this too. yes, the bengal and fishing cat are two different species. however, they are the same genus. this is responsible for the very similar appearances and activites. take a look at the latvian shooter’s post. he has the right of it, and its not cruel imprisonment.
December 30th, 2007 at 03:59:00
They’re shan sugoi pictures. My nek loves mizu, and if I start to fill up the bath tub, he comes running to jump into the tub. I have to keep him from the room by keeping the door closed when I’m filling it up. I found out how much he like mizu when I started seeing him walk around with his head wet all the ji. Then I found him sitting under the faucet in the bathroom while it dripped on his head. Was the only ichi nek I ever had that would strive to be wet constantly. If it rained, he’d meow to go outside. I’m glad I don’t have carpet or it would always have wet paw prints everywhere.
January 1st, 2008 at 13:58:19
i agree with lori ive seen them on life on earth (BBC david attenborough) their about the size of a house cat but some a bigger ,the markings on the fur give it away but it could be a half breed. It could be an ocelot but they have rosettes not spots and thei bigger than a house cat( 4,5 feet). Anyway its cool id love to see one
January 1st, 2008 at 15:43:42
Why didn’t you just find out about the cat from the page you stole the pics from?
January 1st, 2008 at 23:11:32
It’s a fishing cat. We have some in our local zoo and I am accustomed to seeing them in their enclosure quite frequently.
January 5th, 2008 at 17:05:25
Actually, there is an article about this cat and his owners in Russian. Google gives bad translation, but it becomes quite obvious the cat lives in Russia, at home, and it IS a fishing cat.
The cat appears to live with owners since the blind kitten age, so it is completely attuned to humans (at least - to the owners).
I would believe some guy bought the kitten on Sri-Lanka market and brought it to Russia to made him a pet.
Here are the links to Google translation for you:

Look at what it is doing; It is obviousley fishing, hence its name “fishing cat”!
