Checking my stats today, I noticed that I was not getting as many visitors as I was getting in late December perhaps because my site is blocked at most schools or because most people are still at home–year round schools. Whatever the reason, I found out that I was using way too much bandwidth than normal…even more than when I was getting 95,000 pageviews/day.
What was the reason? Some site by the name of POQbum’s Myspace Help was hotlinking to one of my heavier games–Super Flash Mario Bros. I’m glad that my site has enough visibility to be used by a site with that has 500 guests online at the same time, but it’s a little out of line to allow hundreds of requests/day for a 2.4 MB file. What does that equal to for me? A projected 300 GB bandwidth usage by the end of the month. Luckily, Dreamhost increased their bandwidth limit, so I do not owe anything, but please, do not hotlink.
poqbum’s email address. Spam him for me. Do not mention anything about my site; I added a hotlinking flash file so that that file will show instead of the 2.4 MB one. That way, if he keeps my game on his site, I can leech from him and get more visitors.
Gotta love the silver lining.
