Search deep inside the crevices of your brain to see if you can remember a Cool Math Trick post on Sangent. If not, click Cool Math Trick in the previous sentence to jog your memory.

Here is another approach - one without calculators and with variables. You know, for geeks.

  1. Grab a brain.
  2. We have x.
  3. We now have 80x.
  4. We now have 80x+1.
  5. We now have 250*(80x+1) = 20000x + 250.
  6. We now have 20000x+250+y.
  7. We now have 20000x+250+2y.
  8. Subtracting 250 leaves us with 20000x+2y
  9. Dividing the number by 2 leaves us with 10000x+y.

Analysis: Of course since x was the first 3 digits of your phone number, 10000x consists of the first three digits of your phone number followed by 4 zeros. Adding y to this number conveniently replaces these 4 zeros with the last 4 digits of your phone number. So I guess the answer is your phone number (without the hyphen).
